G&L ASAT Special #G03 9967 |
The ASAT was Leo Fender's last version of his
first
solid-body electric guitar. This one has a Purple Sparkle finish and
rosewood fretboard, with a black pickguard & hardware. The pickups on
an ASAT have a very high output, like Gibson's P-90s, but the tone is much
sharper.
When the Who went to the studio to record Can't Explain, they were
surprised to find that the producer had hired Jimmy Page to stand in on the
guitar parts. But the lead guitar part called for a 12-string guitar, that
Jimmy didn't have. So Pete Townshend played the lead guitar solo and Jimmy
played the rhythm part on the same Fender Telecaster that he later used to
record Led Zeppelin's first album. This guitar sounds just like that
Telecaster playing the sharp chords of the rhythm track on Can't Explain.
