The bass guitar was invented in 1952 by Clarence Leo Fender, who called
his invention a Precision Bass, because it was the first string bass
to feature a fretted fingerboard. For nearly two decades following the
introduction of the Fender Precision Bass, the term Fender Bass served
as a synonym for any electric, fretted, bass.
