The word guitar comes from the Arabic word guit, meaning four, and the Sanskrit tar, meaning string. The modern guitar is an instrument that evolved from earlier instruments having four (or four pairs of) strings. The origins of the word indicate the north African and middle eastern origins of this family of stringed instruments. If you would like to know more about the history of guitars, check out
" Acoustic Guitars and Other Fretted Instruments: A Photographic History" by George Gruhn and Walter Carter
Acoustic Guitars This book traces the origins of the guitar back into pre-history and documents every important stage in the development of the modern instrument. The 320 pages of the book include hundreds of beautiful color photographs, not only of guitars but also of mandolins, banjos and other related instruments.

`Rique is always interested to gather additional information about these instruments and their manufacturers, and is eager to correspond with other collectors. Please forward your comments/questions.
